Clarification

Durring the Geek News we mentioned that Apple was no-longer supplying Firewire cables with the iPods. We then ran with the idea that Apple is leaving Firewire. After the show John Tracy cleared things up.

Apple is not going away from Firewire; after all, they developed and marketed the technology (IEEE 1394). They made it to compete with Intel's USB.

True, they are including USB cables with their iPod instead of Firewire; that makes sense since they're going after the Windows market for their iPod, and USB cables are cheaper than Firewire.

Apple has too big a commitment, as do JVC, Sony, Canon, and other mini-dv camcorder manufactures, to abandon Firewire. Apple has no plans to leave them, their legacy machines, and all the peripherals on the market high and dry; such a move would alienate them from a market they've worked so hard to create and capture (that of home mini-dv users). In fact, their Firewire 800 points the way for larger data data transfers, something they're beginning to utilize with their shift to the HD market.

So yes, Apple is putting USB instead of Firewire with their iPods to lower costs, but no, they are not going away from it.
